Artist Statement
Glass! Such a fun material to touch, handle and turn into lusciously colored one-of-a-kind pieces, filled with elements of surprise! The luster and glitz of dichroic glass—each piece completely unique, continues to intrigue me and feeds my craving to experiment and create. But, the most enjoyable aspect of glass fusing is to make others smile when they see what I have created.
Simply stated, fusing causes two or more pieces of glass to stick together when heated in a kiln – resulting in something fun and often functional! I sometimes set aside a scrap of glass that has an interesting shape that leads to a design idea—or I sometimes see designs in ties, carpeting or even in the clouds. Then I create. I have to admit that sometimes it is difficult to stick to plane (plain!) geometry, so adding dots and squiggles allows me to add elements of energy, movement and joy into my fused glassware. Using dots and squiggles in my pieces makes me happy.
Many of my designs include pattern bars - or, more often than not, “random bars” - on dishes, platters, plates, and vases. I love the surprise hidden in pattern bars — something different for every piece I create. I also enjoy experimenting with new techniques— the challenge is so rewarding when I “figure it out!” And I am always scouting for new techniques to teach budding glass artists who attend my home studio workshops.
I hope you enjoy my fused glass creations as much as I enjoy making them!
